Marine Collagen: Skin, Cartilage, Bones and How Collagen Works
Collagen is the most abundant structural protein in the human body. It forms part of the framework that supports the skin, cartilage, bones, tendons, ligaments and other connective tissues.
The body continually produces and renews collagen, but natural production gradually declines with age. Sun exposure, smoking, poor nutrition and other lifestyle factors can also affect the body’s collagen structures.
Nutrition A2Z Hydrolysed Marine Collagen provides 10 g of marine collagen per serving, together with Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid and a carefully selected blend of B vitamins. The natural orange flavour makes it easy to include as part of a consistent daily routine.
What is hydrolysed marine collagen?
Marine collagen is obtained from fish. The collagen undergoes hydrolysis, a process that breaks its large protein molecules into smaller chains called collagen peptides.
Collagen peptides are easier to dissolve and digest than untreated collagen. Following digestion, they are broken down into amino acids and small peptides that can be absorbed and used by the body as nutritional building materials.
The body determines where these nutrients are required. Taking collagen does not mean that it travels directly to one particular part of the body, but it provides amino acids associated with the body’s normal production and maintenance of connective tissues.
Each serving provides 10 g of hydrolysed marine collagen.
Collagen and the skin
Collagen forms an important part of the skin’s deeper structural layer, where it contributes to its strength and framework. Natural collagen production becomes slower with age, while existing collagen fibres may become more fragmented.
Clinical research into hydrolysed collagen peptides has reported improvements in measurements such as skin hydration and elasticity in some participants following consistent use. However, individual results can differ according to age, diet, lifestyle, sun exposure, the collagen source and the length of use.
Collagen supplements should therefore be viewed as nutritional support rather than a guaranteed anti-ageing treatment.
Why is Vitamin C important for collagen formation?
The body cannot manufacture normal collagen without Vitamin C. It is required during the biological processes through which collagen fibres are formed and stabilised.
Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of:
• Skin
• Cartilage
• Bones
• Blood vessels
• Gums
• Teeth
Each serving provides 180 mg of Vitamin C as calcium ascorbate.
Vitamin C also contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress, normal energy-yielding metabolism, normal immune-system function and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
Collagen and cartilage
Cartilage is the smooth, resilient connective tissue found at the ends of bones within joints. Its structure includes collagen fibres, which help provide a supportive framework.
Hydrolysed collagen has been studied in active adults and people experiencing joint discomfort. Some research has produced encouraging findings, particularly when collagen peptides have been used consistently for several months. However, collagen supplements should not be presented as treating arthritis, repairing damaged joints or replacing professional medical care.
The Vitamin C in this formula contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of cartilage.
Collagen and bones
Although bones are often associated primarily with calcium, they also contain a collagen-rich organic framework. This collagen matrix provides a structure upon which bone minerals are deposited.
Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of bones. Maintaining normal bones also depends on several other factors, including adequate calcium and Vitamin D intake, regular weight-bearing activity and an overall balanced diet.
What does Hyaluronic Acid contribute?
Hyaluronic Acid is a naturally occurring substance found throughout the body, including within the skin, eyes and connective tissues. It has a strong ability to bind water and forms part of the body’s normal moisture-containing tissue environment.
Nutrition A2Z Marine Collagen provides 25 mg of Hyaluronic Acid per serving in the form of sodium hyaluronate.
Oral Hyaluronic Acid has been investigated for its potential contribution to skin hydration and appearance. Some human studies have reported encouraging results after consistent use, although responses vary and it should not be regarded as a guaranteed treatment for dry skin or wrinkles.
Why are B vitamins included?
The formula contains a complementary blend of Vitamin B1, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin B12, Biotin and Pantothenic Acid.
These vitamins support several normal functions within the body.
Biotin contributes to:
• The maintenance of normal skin and hair
• Normal energy-yielding metabolism
• Normal functioning of the nervous system
• Normal macronutrient metabolism
Niacin contributes to:
• The maintenance of normal skin
• Normal energy-yielding metabolism
• Normal functioning of the nervous system
• The reduction of tiredness and fatigue
Riboflavin contributes to:
• The maintenance of normal skin
• The protection of cells from oxidative stress
• Normal energy-yielding metabolism
• The reduction of tiredness and fatigue
Vitamin B6 contributes to:
• Normal protein and glycogen metabolism
• Normal energy-yielding metabolism
• Normal functioning of the nervous system
• Normal immune-system function
• The reduction of tiredness and fatigue
Vitamin B12 contributes to:
• Normal energy-yielding metabolism
• Normal functioning of the nervous system
• Normal red-blood-cell formation
• Normal immune-system function
• The reduction of tiredness and fatigue
Pantothenic Acid contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism, normal mental performance and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
Folate contributes to normal amino-acid synthesis, normal blood formation, normal psychological function and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.

When should marine collagen be taken?
There is no single compulsory time to take collagen. Consistency is generally more important than whether it is taken in the morning or evening.
Add one level scoop—approximately 10.35 g—to 250 ml of water or juice. Shake well until fully dissolved. It can be added to a cold or warm drink and dissolves most effectively in tepid liquid.
Avoid adding it directly to boiling liquid. Do not exceed the recommended daily serving.
How long does collagen take to work?
Collagen is intended for consistent nutritional use rather than an immediate effect. Published studies commonly assess changes after several weeks or months of regular intake.
Results are not guaranteed and can vary between individuals. Diet, hydration, sleep, sun protection, smoking, alcohol consumption and general health can all influence the condition of the skin and connective tissues.
